Thanks a bunch for making my day with your so sweet and lovely comments on my hat last post. Some of you have wondered if I could share the pattern, honestly I didn't write it down when I were making, so I tried to write it down here in case you would like to use. Please feel free to let me know if there's any mistake.
With size F (3.75mm) crochet hook and some cotton (or any kind of yarn as you wish), make a Magic circle.
Flat circle for the top:
- Round 1: Ch 3 (count as the first dc), 11 dc in loop. Join with slip stitch to the beginning chain 3 (12 dc)
- Round 2: 2 dc in each stitch around (24 dc)
- Round 3: *1 dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue around from *. Join (36 dc)
- Round 4: *1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue around from *. Join (48 dc)
- Round 5: *1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue around from *.Join (60 dc)
- Round 6: *1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue around from *. Join (72 dc)
- Round 7: *1 dc in each of the next 5 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue around from *. Join (84 dc)
- Round 1: Ch 3 (count as the first dc), * skip 2 stitches, work 2 dc in the next stitch, chain 1, 2 dc in the same stitch (this will form a shell). Skip 2 stitches, dc in the next stitch. Continue from * for the remainder of the round. Join with slip stitch to the beginning chain 3 (14 shells in total)
- Round 2: Ch 1, Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC) around the previous chain-3, chain 1 (count as the first FPDC). * Skip 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next ch-1 space, chain 1, 2 dc in the same stitch to complete a shell. Skip 2 stitches, work 1 Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) around the previous dc. Continue around from * for the remainder. Join to the chain 1 right above the first FPSC. (You will have total of 14 shells and 14 FPDC between each shell).
- Repeat round 2 for the next 9 rounds. Join with slip stitch to the first FPDC.
- (This will straighten the shells) Ch 1, FPSC around the previous stitch, * hdc in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch, slip stitch to the chain-1 space, sc in the next stitch, hdc in the next stitch, FPDC around the previous FPDC. Continue around from * for the remainder. Join (84 stitches in total)
Ridge brim:
Note: make a FPDC instead of a dc around every previous FPDC. This will create the ridges for your brim.
- Round 1: Ch 1, FPSC around the previous stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch (make an increase). * 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue from *. Join (105 dc in total)
- Round 2: Ch 1, FPSC around the previous stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch (make an increase). * 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue from *. (126 dc)
- Round 3: Ch 1, FPSC around the previous stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in each stitches around. (126 dc)
- Round 4: Ch 1, FPSC around the previous stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch (make an increase). * 1 dc in each of the next 5 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue from *. (147 dc)
- Round 5: Ch 1, FPSC around the previous stitch, ch 1, 1 dc in each stitches around. (147 dc)
Update:

This is the cutest hat ever! I want to make one! Thanks so much for sharing the pattern; you are soooo sweet!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing hat. I have one question. After the first round of 12 DC, are you crocheting in a continuous round or do you join with a slip stitch and start each round with a ch 3? I am just a bit confused. Thanks again for sharing. Look forward to hearing from you. Sarah
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteIn this pattern, I do join with a slip stitch and start a new round with a chain 3.
Sorry for late reply. Hope you have a great new week!
I was a bit confused. I guess I did t realize you started early h row with chain 3. May be that is why mine is so small.

ReplyDeleteYesterday I finised it. The hat goes to chemohatcampaing, where we collect hats to the women who have lost hair during the chemetreatmenns.
Next I will make the Cranny Hat for myself for my coming holiday at Spain. It looks very beautiful.
Love from Seijasisko from Finland
This is really cute! I really want to make this. Do you mind if I post a link to Pinterest so I can remember how to find my way back to this page?
ReplyDeleteHi Janice, you are welcome to post a link to Pinterest! I'm so happy you like my pattern, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I started working on it yesterday, but for some reason the hat didn't look as good to me in black (the color my mom had requested), so I ended up just making a really plain "patternless" hat instead, using the flower from your pattern here for decoration. And I am pleased. :)
ReplyDeleteI found your wonderful pattern the other day and decided that I'd make your "Ridge Hat with Brim' for myself. Until I got to the brim part I had no problem. Making the FPDC's in the brim is no problem but figuring out exactly how many DC's there are between the FPDC's of each round is what has me puzzled. Can you give me the number of Dc's between the FPDC on each round of the brim.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try it!! Thanks for the pattern. :)
ReplyDeleteOh this is gorgeous. I love the shape and the stitch design. Clever you! Thanks so much for sharing, I am off to find some yarn right now :-)
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI just ask if it is okay to translate this to Finnish and publish at my blog. Some of my finnish friends have hoped for it.Of course I will put link to this origineal pattern.
Love fron Seija from Finland
Hi! Thank you visiting my blog. Now the Rigdehat is translated in finnish. I just published it at my blog! Thank you for the nice pattern! Much love from Seijasisko

Thanks for the nice pattern. Haven't made anything for my Mom in a long time, I think I will try this.
ReplyDeleteI love the lines of this hat! I included a link to it in a roundup of great summer hats on my blog this morning. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know that I posted about it on my blog
Thanks for sharing the pattern!
Love this! I'm trying to decide if I need to use a different hook size since I have a large-ish head. How big around is the hat when finished? Thanks!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: So glad you like it! :) The hat fits my head well, it's about 22-22.5 inch round. Does this help you?
ReplyDeleteThis hat is absolutely gorgeous! Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to get the lovely bell shaping of the body of the hat, or the brim. I do find the instructions for the brim rather confusing.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wicked cute hat pattern. I made the hat once and it came out HUGE. I used the size F crochet hook. So, I am here making it again and I feel it's still coming out bigger than it's supposed to. What size crochet hook do I need to use to make this hat for a toddler? I thought a size F hook would work...I'm still an amateur! Thank you!
ReplyDelete@ Amber Graeber:
ReplyDeleteHello!
I'm trying to find your blog or email to respond this but cannot get it so I'm back here to reply you. What kind of yarn you are using? For mine I used size F hook and medium cotton yarn. I have not yet tried for toddlers so not quite sure about this. But you can check on Ravelry for yarn and hook people make for their children: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ridge-hat-with-brim/people
Hope you can have your answer soon...
Best, LS
I am using Red Heart yarn...super saver and it's worsted yarn. I'll have to check into the yarn I've been using. Maybe I'm not using the right kind! :) My e mail address is ambergraeber2010@yahoo.com if you want to write me there, but writing here is fine too! I looked for sizing on child sized hats and this is what they had:
ReplyDeletePreemie: E/F hook Depending on your preemie.
Newborn: F hook
3-6 Months: G/H hook - H would be a bit bigger.
6-9 Months: H/I hook - I would be bigger.
9-12 Months: I/J hook
However I am completely confused because you used size F hook for this hat for an adult. So maybe where I got this is wrong? Also, I'm new to crocheting hats / clothes/ etc so how do I know what type of yarn to use for a pattern to get it to turn out correctly?
Apparently I have a small head...As the pattern is written my hat formed a ridge at the top. I think that decreasing the rows of the hat body by 2 would be good for those of us with smaller noggins.
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern. I just posted it to my fan page for all the ladies to make and donate. www.facebook.com/crochetforcancer

ReplyDeleteI've been crocheting for many years but never heard of a magic circle. What is it? How do you make it?
ReplyDeleteLOVE this pattern. Hope to try it when I complete some of the other projects I'm working on. A HUGE THANK YOU to you!
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous: Please check this link out, you will know how to make a magic circle :)

@ Theresa Wiza: You are very welcome! :) I hope you enjoy making it!
ReplyDeleteSo cute, I'm looking for something for my grandaughter and this is perfect. Thank you so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is a magic circle??
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI am a beginner in crochet....I like to try this hat but I don't know how to make 11 dc in a loop?? I know to make the dc but in the loop???
Love your pattern. Can't wait to try it!! Soundari crochet 11 dc INTO the loop.
ReplyDeleteThks for sharing. I love your hat patterns...going to try it out. I have tried your flower with big petals and added an edge of sc to it...vy nice, I love it. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteLovely hat! I have one and a half done. I found the hook size to make it too small, so had to adjust to a bigger one, but otherwise it's worked well. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of this hat and can hardly wait to see it finished, but I had trouble getting started because I have only made the magic circle with sc. I'm probably an intermediate crocheter, but the shift you make in the instructions from MC to Round 1 might confuse beginners. As a technical writer, I would like to make a suggestion for writing a process like a crochet pattern. 1. Always include the weight of the yarn you use for the sample and the hook size for that yarn. 2. When you want the user to start with the MC--tell them up front to make it with 11 dc--just for clarity don't separate the MC instruction from Round 1. Some patterns don't consider the MC to be R1.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern.
This is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI just love this hat, however I'm having problems starting the "body" you say to work the dc ch 1 dc in every 3rd stitch, if I do that I get 28 shells, not 14 so did you mean every 6th stitch?
ReplyDelete@Dee: You could have confused, the 1st round of body pattern says: "dc, *skip 2 sts, 2 dc in the next stitch, chain 1, 2 dc in the same stitch (this will form a shell). Skip 2 stitches, dc in the next st". This doesn't mean [dc-ch1-dc] is made every 3rd st. If read it carefully you should notice this means the multiple is 6, not 3. Did you notice the "skip 2 sts" between each [2dc-ch1-2dc]? Then you should have 14 shells instead 28.
ReplyDeleteWhen you make your magic circle, how many stitches do you start with. The video only makes 3. Then do I start right up with your instructions?
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute hat! I'll make it for my granddaughters and some for charity! Thank you so much for the free pattern!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your lovely pattern! It whipped up VERY quickly, and turned out beautifully!
ReplyDeleteThank you for a wonderful looking hat pattern - I know just the person to stand under it. Your hard work is appreciated :-)
ReplyDeleteOK
ReplyDeleteLove your ridge hat! I would like to make it for my 4 yr old grand daughter and am having a difficult time adjusting the pattern to make it smaller. Any assitance would be greatly appreciated. I had to stop after round 6 because that was big enough for her head, but when skipping to round 1 of the "hat body" the stitches are out of sinc! HELP
ReplyDeleteI'm really bad--stuck on the first row. It says chain 3, then 11 dc in loop. What loop? Thanks Karla
ReplyDeleteLove this hat! Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! do you have a tutorial site for this pattern?
ReplyDeleteHi Lovestitch. I am trying to make this pattern, I don't know what happen but is getting really big: on your instructions you said that I should have 14 shell and I got 28. The last round for the crown has 84 stitches and I followed your instructions to make the shells. I used F hook. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you My e-mail is lady38saver@gmail.com or you can responde here. Have a good evening.
ReplyDeleteLove this hat. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh man...can i just buy the hat already made?? :( im not a knitter, im a buyer! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this adorable pattern. I made my own version and the pattern was easy to follow. I put some pictures to my blog and the link for this website. Thank you!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi! Love this hat!! Just want to be clear because my stitch count on the round of the hat are not coming out correctly... starting at rd 3- I would chain 3 then dc 1 into that same stitch and then increase and repeat from there right? Or am I doing something else wrong, because I count after doing 1dc in the next st then 2dc in the following and so on, and I'm coming out a stitch off.
ReplyDeleteThanks again.. beautiful work!
Increase rounds for brim do not come out right...with even increases between fpdc...in shell spaces....can u please explain how and whrre the increases are supposed to land? I have tried everything;counting fpdc...not counting them ..etc
ReplyDeleteHelp!
Love the hat
I love this hat. I am making fr my friend who is going through Chemo. However something is just not right in the directions for the brim. As mentioned by other above. At the end of the at Body you have 84 stitches ( me too), but after 12st rnd of brim you show count should be 105, I get 98. You are increasing 14 stitches, should be 98 (which is what I get). Then on Rnd. 3, it just doesn't make sense, if you follow the pattern, the increase stitch sometimes ends up where you are doing the FPDC???? Very confused, but so want to finish this for my friend asap. Please help... Thank You, Sherry email:
